I also am hyper-sensitive to noise and other minor discomforts. The moment I lie down to sleep, my ears perk up. A faucet dripping in another room will WAKE ME UP; my wife breathing quietly next to me will keep me awake, etc. It is a plague. White noise machines and fans of all kinds keep me awake. Ear plugs of all types are uncomfortable and keep me awake, and they don't work at all to block sound, unless the sound is already on the threshold of audibility. Worse for low pitch sounds. Dogs barking a mile away keep me awake. I need total, absolute silence to sleep. Any suggestions? After more than 22 years of marriage, my wife has seen me asleep ONCE. If she awakes in the middle of the night, I must hear her eyelids open or something, because I immediately speak to her and ask if she is having a hard time sleeping. Once a noise starts and keeps me awake, I tense up and have a very hard time relaxing to sleep. Getting up in the mornings is ROUGH; I feel awful.
