A simple "4-hour" Benadryl or other antihistamine tablet (even at half-dosage) knocks me out cold for 24 hours; I can't get up the next morning. Except for the times when it doesn't knock me out, but keeps me awake. Be careful of pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, etc. also in some cough medications), a decongestant, not an antihistamine, which keeps many people, including me, awake. It makes me very jittery. I have not tried any other medications. Also, frequently I will doze off rather quickly after going to bed, only to wake up with a jerk within minutes, and then be very tense (shoulders, legs, and brain racing) and not be able to get to sleep for hours.I think that this is most likely an "unconcious" tension problem; and I need to reduce the tension in my lifestyle. I tend to obsessive about completing tasks, and a perfectionist, and this probably keeps my brain going when I should be relaxing.
