OK, here goes. I used to be a normal sleeper. Then about 8 years ago, when I was living with my dad, my brother came to live with us. I was 19 at the time and he was 12. Anyway, my brother at this point was a total punk and would often try and sneak into my room while I was asleep and take stuff. This bothered me on two levels. First of all, it was my stuff, but more importantly, that was my personal space and he was invading it. I soon conditioned myself to wake up at the first hint of the door opening (and lots of other noises, unfortunately. I later moved out of my dad's house, but retain the sensitivity to noise to this day. So I've been a light sleeper for the past 8 years, but any actual episodes of insomnia were brief (2 weeks at most) and the cause was always easy to pinpoint (stress, moving, new job, etc.). So when this latest episode hit in February, right after I changed jobs, I wrote it off and figured it would pass like before. It was particularly rough as I went from working second shift to regular morning hours (8-5) and I have always been more of a night person. Four months later i still can't sleep and it's starting to really get to me. I've noticed a gradual decline in my quality of sleep over the past couple of years and this seems to be just an extension of that, although it usually fades back down to manageable levels. Some days are better than others, but it's frustrating since no one seems to understand. I've quit talking about the fact that I have difficulty sleeping because the most common response is "Why?" If I knew why, I wouldn't have this problem. Stupid people. Anyway, I've tried lots of different meds (both natural and prescription), relaxation, exercise, you name it. I've even been seeing a psychologist about it and still the problem persists. I've kind of slacked off on the exercise lately, but I've tried to cut out all caffiene except my morning coffee (you don't know how hard that was). I don't smoke, and my alcohol intake is limited to a couple of beers every now and then. I'm having some more blood work done next week (I told them I want the full spectrum thyroid test, not just TSH), but I have a feeling it'll come back normal. I know I should be happy about that, but at least if something was abnormal, I could pinpoint the problem. Anyway, I've begun rambling, so I'll stop now. Thanks for the info and let me know what you think.
