Hey, Steve...I hear you on many levels...I know how hard the coffee thing was because I've given it up too...I just have an occasional decaf in the morning. On the night person thing, you're hearing from "Night Owl" personified...and my husband is a lark who loves the morning..yikes!!!!
Going back to when your brother used to invade your room when you were asleep, I've got to ask....couldn"t you just have put a lock on the door and saved yourself a lot of anguish?? Besides, you were big brother(no pun intended) and I'm surprised he'd dare enter, at least when you were there. My older sisters would have killed me (not literally) if I'd dare enter their private domain.
What I think you have is what I have , only for different reasons, and that's "learned insomnia". Whether you realize it consciously or not,I think your subconscious has stored the pattern you established of remaining "alert" while asleep to be "on guard" if you will. The good thing is that "learned" things or habits, can be "unlearned". I'm sure it was over a period of time that you became noise sensitive and it will take at least that long to unlearn. Kind of like wanting to lose weight that's gained...we want it off overnight and yet it might have taken months or years to put it on.
Good earplugs are marvellous for blocking out sounds and also breathing and heartbeat become magnified and it may help to relax you. I think you've got to adopt a "I'm going to get a good night's sleep attitude and I don't care what happens when I'm asleep". If your alarm is set you'll be up for work so you don't have to worry about that. Also, with the new job you may be carrying more stress than you realize and this could be a factor. Remember the "Say Goodnight to Insomnia" book by Gregg Jacobs available on this forum...I can't tell you how helpful that book has been. Particularly if you read it late at night when you're probably not as distracted as through the day. Only somebody who has experienced insomnia can be understanding and know where you are coming from...the "not being the only one" feeling is dissipated when you read this wonderful forum. I can't say enough about how helpful it's been for me and Sandman and Sandmama do a superb job of monitoring it all. Hope I've been of some help. If you want to continue the discussion(if its helpful) you can put in your email address or we can resume on the forum. Good Luck and Good Sleep.
