Posted by Adrienne on July 13, 2001 at 16:04:59:Thanks so much to Beth for the detailed advice and encouragement. It was encouraging but unfortunately, things are not going well with following the plan in Say Goodnight to Insomnia and Desperately Seeking Snoozin'. I was so excited about the possibility of this improving my sleep but I have gotten only about 2 hours of sleep the last 3 nights on the system and am feeling desperate and unable to continue. That is much less sleep than I was getting before I started with their suggestions. Maybe I put too much pressure on myself to follow the structure...to do it right? I really don't know, but my body would just not let down to sleep the past 3 nights no matter what I did. The first 2 nights I slept 5-1/2 and 4-1/2 hours respectively and though better than the past 3 nights, that is less, too, than I was usually sleeping before. Has anyone had a similar experience when beginning this approach? Did things improve? When? Any suggestions? Has anyone modified the programs outlined in those books, especially Wiedman's because they didn't seem to be helpful? What were your results? He really warns against changing anything but this is not working well enough for me. I'm thinking of relaxing on the schedule a bit but generally following the concept of a fairly regular bedtime and waking time, not spending much time trying to sleep in bed (instead go elsewhere until sleepy). Also, the sleep centers in my area do not offer cognitive-behavioral therapy. Anyone know of a good sleep specialist who does that therapy in the Twin Cities (Minnesota) area?
