Thanks for resonding to my posting. From reading this form, I know 5-1/2 hours of sleep sounds pretty good to some insomniacs. After the last week of getting a lot less than that, it sounds pretty good to me right now, too! I used to sleep 7-1/2 to 9 hours a night before insomnia hit about 5 years ago. Either I'm a person who needs that much sleep or the quality of my sleep is poor, leaving me feel unrested. After a couple of nights of 5-1/2 hours of sleep, I have constant headaches, trouble concentrating, am very fatigued and irritable, tend to get sick more often, etc. I have given up sleeping with my husband because every little thing wakes me up. And recently I had been having more trouble getting TO sleep. I had begun to take sleep meds more and more often when I had trouble. I think I wouldn't have been able to get 5-1/2+ hours of sleep without the meds. I have had to take a higher dosage to get the same effect and I'm uncomfortable taking them, especially so much. Also, I often spent 8-10 hours in bed to get those 5-1/2 hours of sleep. So that's why I tried the sleep restriction. I'm looking for something to help me return to better sleeping. I plan to continue limiting my time in bed and following a regular sleep schedule but I think I will stay open to continuing some of the things that have helped me in the past like reading in bed and taking short naps even though Wiedman advises against them. Another book I read recently, No More Sleepless Nights, is less rigid and acknowledges that people have insomnia for different reasons and so respond better to different approaches. I think the way I initially approached the sleep restriction idea heightened my fear of not sleeping which is a big factor in my insomnia now. So, I'll just keep working with it and other things to find what works. The support of people like you in this forum has helped me feel less alone in this challenge.
