Hi Adrienne,

I tried the miscellaneous sleep hygiene suggestions and some sleep restriction, too (using the same books). I tried these methods BEFORE I went to medication. The basic principles behind everything are sound and reasonable, BUT when you add a human to the equation you never know what might happen.

I had such difficulty that I bailed. One reason was I was turning into such an emotional monster from all the sleep deprivation and anxiety that my husband was practically begging me to try medication. Another reason was that some of the techniques actually INCREASED my anxiety level. For example, getting out of bed if you're not asleep within a certain time. This just set up a little race in my head to get to sleep and did not help at all. While up and about I was so exhausted and miserable that I couldn't really DO anything productive; not even read.

I do wonder whether it would have worked if I had hung in there a little longer but I felt my life had been disrupted beyond my ability to deal with it.

As for cognitive therapies, certainly check with your place of employment for whether a series of visits to a therapist are covered in a special wellness program or something. I am doing this while using medication for sleep, and I'm sure just talking to someone else (in person) about your fears and your sleep restriction project would do you some good, even if the person is not a specialist.

Good luck!
