sleep anxiety and meds

Posted by Claudia on August 25, 2001 at 00:21:38:

My question is for all people who can't sleep because of the fear of no sleeping. It's been a week for me, and all I do all day is worry about not sleeping at night, and when the night comes I feel the anxiety and adrenaline all over my body. I took valium (small doses) during the first 5 days, but didn't help much, I don't want to take it because it will be worse in the long run.
One thing I notice in the postings is that people try all types of meds to sleep. Could it be the meds that make the insomnia worse in the long run? Is there anybody that has not tried anything and still can't sleep after weeks? I wonder if the meds we try alter the brain chemistry. What if we don't take anything when starting having problems with insomnia? In my case, it's been 3 days since my last valium and I'm sleeping an average of 3/4 hrs p/night. Very anxious about it, and wonder if I'll be able to sleep without pills. It seems that the first thing most of us do is look for a med to solve the problem, which may be the cause of "long term" insomnia. Just my theory, what do you think?
