Insomnia has a downward spiral effect if left unchecked. If you are getting some sleep and want to avoid meds, by all means get some guidance(professional or your own research) on cognitive/behavioural approaches before the insomnia becomes learned. I think this takes longer than a week or two. If you are getting no sleep whatsoever night after night, by all means under your Dr.'s care get medication to give yourself a break....no point in worrying long term if your present is unendurable. You must realize though that the med is only temporary and short term while you practice all the other aspects of good sleep hygiene. There are many excellent books available to assist you...check out the ones available on this website. Good Luck!!
