This message made me think, because I remember reading some time ago that the people who suffer most from insomnia are housewives and the unemployed. I related it to myself - although I am neither a housewife nor unemployed, my job is very solitary and boring with practically no human contact (but the money's good which is why I'm still doing it). I therefore have plenty of time during the day to dwell on my miserable thoughts (usually about lack of sleep) which, obviously, just makes the problem worse. My situation could therefore be compared to that of an unemployed person or housewife (i.e. lonely and frustrated with too much time to think). After years of trying to analyse my problem of chronic insomnia I think I've finally found the answer, and therefore your father's answer. Sitting around at home all day just makes insomnia worse. Your father really needs to develop hobbies, get out of the house, try to make new friends or see old friends, keep physically active and be as sociable as possible (difficult sometimes, I know).

A couple of months ago at work I had a lot of pressure with deadlines and.....lo and behold, during that period my sleep was quite good! Recently, there has been less work because of the summer break, therefore no pressure, and I spend my day sitting in front of the computer alone and my sleep has got immeasurably worse! I think this is very interesting and should be explored more. Some people (or maybe all?) need pressure and activity and action to feel good and sleep, even though at the time they might not realise it. I really am beginning to think that this is the case with me and it could well be the case with your father. Could he not take up another form of business just to keep himself occupied?

Anyway, hoping that this might give you food for thought, I wish you and your father all the best.

Lynne
