3 Days Restless Nights HELP!

Posted by Kelly on August 28, 2001 at 08:16:18:

Today is the first day that I have decided to seek help with my insomnia.

I get insomnia usually about once a month and it can last for 2 to 5 days. I have trouble getting to sleep sometimes it is because of stress or something on my mind but in most cases it is for no reason. It seems as though my mind will not rest almost like a numb feeling or sensation sometimes even a buzzing sound. My heart tends to pound loud and fast so loud it keeps me awake. I know that most of the problem comes from a fear of not getting to sleep afraid I will not be able to function the next day at work. Sometimes I will start to drift off but I am awakened again I look at the clock and panic. I usually don't go the entire night without sleeping most nights I will get between 2-4 hours I will fall asleep around 1 or 2 am and wake at 5am I need to get up at 6am so I wake early as well.

I can't function without sleep and my job and life tends to suffer. I have tried over the counter medications and for the most part they have a reverse affect and make matters worse they actual make me more alert. I refuse to take medications out of fear of addiction. My mom also suffers bad with insomnia and is addicted to sleep medications. Makes me wonder if the problem may be hereditary.

What I am looking for are ways to relax naturally with no meds. I would be willing to try herbal remedies. There has to be away to get over my anxiety without drugs. If you could suggest web sites, books or anything that would be helpful for mild cases of insomnia it would be greatly appreciated.

I have not seen a doctor or discussed my problem with anyone besides my boyfriend. Do you think a doctor is really necessary? I don't want to be mislead or encouraged to take meds.

Thanks for listening I know it is long winded but I needed to write it down.
