As someone who has fallen into the prescription med trap, I applaud you on your efforts to remain drug free-thats great! I would recommend (and many other posters on this board would as well...) checking out Desperately Seeking Snoozin' by John Weidman and say Goodnight to Insmnia by Greg Jacobs. Both endorse a drug-free way of improving your sleep patterns, and changing your anxietal thoughts when you are trying to sleep.

One thing that has worked for me and that i would recommend is, not staying in bed, watching the clock when you can't sleep. it is better in terms of your anxiety level to leave your bed, and go into another, dimly lit room and watch a rerun on tv or read-and don't try to fall back to sleep. try not to think about it-trying too hard only makes it worse. leaving your bed serves the purpose that you will not associate your bed with not sleeping-thats a good part of the battle.

anyway, best of luck to you! 2-5 nights per month, while distressing and uncomfortable is not as bad as some of the other people on tis board. you have a good chance to get this under control if you can work on relaxing and changing your thoughts!
