I have a mild case like your son. The first thing that really helped my driving was just knowing that there was a reason I was nodding off. Now I am much more aware and cautious and my wife worries less.

I do not take anything or use any foods or drinks to keep me awake while driving except morning coffee and an occassional afternoon latte. One thing that I have found very helpful is keeping my mind occupied with intersting books on tape or even listening to NPR News while driving. Sometimes even that does not work and I pull over on a safe street for a 10 minute nap. This makes me a safer driver.
