Barbara,
I can understand your son's reluctance to take Ritilin...it doesn't feel too good, although it keeps us awake. Have you looked into other drug options? I am just starting on the new Provigil and am finding that it seems to be working...still working out the "bugs", but that seems to be how it goes when getting used to how these drugs react to each individual's chemistry. I have found that all the tricks in the book can't help from falling asleep while driving if I'm not medicated. If he has a life of this ahead of him, he should consider taking medication. I could get by with driving when in my teens using the little tricks and a lot of God's protection to help me through...I know there were times that I was just not safe. But, now that I'm older (late-30's)I don't have a choice if I want to be a responsible motorist. Its hard to resign to having to take a drug for the rest of my life, but its all part of taking care of myself as well as others on the road.
