Any Suggestions???

I was diagnosed last June (1998) with N. About a 1.5 years prior, I would always fall asleep in front of the TV. Gradually it worsened from occasionally falling asleep during my commute to constantly falling asleep and having numerous close calls. I really don't know how I avoided a car accident. I used to stand up to watch a movie my wife and I rented until I started falling asleep standing up. It took falling asleep in my dinner 3 different nights before I went to the doctor. After a sleep/nap study, it was N. I'm taking Ritalin (10 mg 4x/day - 7 AM, 12 Noon, 5 PM, and 9 PM). Driving is somewhat better, but I have to take between 200-800 mg of caffeine each day to stay awake. My mood is constantly going from hyper to catatonic. My skin is always crawling and I binge on food to try to fill the empty feeling. Before I was diagnosed, N almost cost me my marriage because my wife felt unimportant because I could stay awake when I was working (brain stimulated), but when I was home with her, I was more relaxed and would fall asleep. Now, I'm not the person she married. I went from mild-tempered to short-tempered. I'm always on the edge of exploding. I can't concentrate on anything and I can't remember anything. Having an excuse for these feelings and actions sometimes seems empowering, but in the long run just disheartening. I don't know which is worse - sleepy or edgy? Forget about church, I fall asleep as soon as I sit down and that embarasses my wife as well.

I'm afraid to try a different drug for fear that I'll lose the wakefulness that I have. It's feels good to know I'm not alone with these problems, but it's bad in that I wouldn't wish them on anyone!!!
