Posted by Barbara Donnelly on April 16, 1999 at 11:00:32:My son, now 17, was diagnosed with narcolepsy 1 1/2 years ago after extensive tests at Georgetown Medical Center could find no reason for his "passing out". His EEG suggested the follow-up with a sleep test that concluded he had narcolepsy (I believe that all of his other tests indicated that he could have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as well). As the doctor was prescribing him amphetimines to keep him awake during the day, and sleeping pills to put him to sleep at night, I asked what causes narcolepsy. He said that no one knows, but drugs are how they treat the symptoms. The only test he had never had was an ALLERGY TEST. I took him in to get one, even tho he has no typical allergy symptoms such as skin rashes, hives, stuffy nose, anaphylaxis. Even the allergist could not believe how many things he is allergic to: dustmites, weeds and trees for the inhalant allergies (he is now receiving shots), but the worst were the FOOD ALLERGIES! He is allergic to beans, carrots, peanuts, corn, potatoes, and the worst of all, SOY! It took almost 5 months to totally be able to understand food labels and eliminate the offending foods. Since that time he has not fallen asleep once, he is not fatigued any more, his SAT score went up an incredible 80 points because he could actually concentrate on the test, and he has all A's as a senior in HS. I have challenged Georgetown to re-test my son, but so far they have not accepted the challenge. PLEASE, PLEASE! If you have not had an extensive allergy test, go have one TODAY! It is painless and non-invasive. It has changed my son's life, and he is DRUG FREE! If you have food allergies, you must be vigilant. Feel free to contact me for help in reading labels. My son cannot eat any commercially prepared foods, as they almost all have either soy or corn in them. And do not count on your allergist, or any other doctor for that matter, to encourage you to try this approach. The idea of allergies is too new and "radical" to the medical profession. If you don't have a stuffy nose or hives they figure that you are not having a "reaction". I will tell you differently! I have my son to prove it! The allergies over-stressed his immune system and the result for him was his "falling asleep". Please, anyone who has an allergy test run on them, let me know your results and if this approach has any bearing on your condition. I figure if even ONE person can be helped by this, that all of my postings to forums, etc, are worth it. Don't let the medical profession get away with telling you they don't know why you have this condition. There is a reason. I was lucky enough to find the reason for my son's narcolepsy. I hope that all of you will be as fortunate. I have been there with you, through my son.
Sincerly,
Barbara Donnelly beeger@prodigy.com
