I have a friend who gets clinical depression. She went from a beautiful, bubbly, intimidatingly sophisticated and successful person to someone who didn't wash, and was incommunicative.
What I am trying to say that, in my experience, like you say, people with depression do not get excited about Christmas or look ahead. They can't face life. I know that I don't have depression. I have very sleepy, right-off days and can feel very fed-up about things, and especially people's lack of understanding. I can still get excited about things though (in fact I am child-like in my love of life).
Can't wait to see my children open their stockings on Christmas morning and see my favourite relative, my Grandad, who's coming to stay!
I love my life, I just want more of it, not this small percentage I am alert enough to participate in. That is a key difference, and perhaps worth pointing out to your next MD, after you've ditched your current one. Have a fantastic Christmas!
