Alert or just awake?

I seem to have plenty of time to think about drugs there being at least a couple more months to go before I see the neurologist.
Can anyone tell me if Provigil, Ritalin etc. help you to feel more 'with it' rather than just keeping your body awake. In other words do they treat the hazy, removed, wavy feeling and not just the falling asleep bit?
