I've only been diagnosed for a few weeks, and luckily have been adjusting well so far. But, I can say that several years ago I was dealing with severe depression and seeking counseling was VERY helpful.

Don't think of it as paying someone to be your friend. These people are professional listeners. Even the best of friends (and spouses) may not be ideal listeners. It took a lot of subtle and not so subtle messages from my boss, the HR dept, and my doctor to finally get me to go to an EAP (Employee Assistance Program). To be honest I don't know the credentials of the person I talked to. I met with her several times, and felt MUCH better.

For me, it was a huge weight lifted to have someone listen, not interrupt [can you tell I talk a lot? :) ] and to tell me that I was not crazy. The support of the people here at the Forum is similar validation, but there is something different one-on-one in person.

I don't know how to locate someone familiar with Narcolepsy, but I think it would be worth trying.

GOOD LUCK!
