I use a light that my husband bought for me through a mail order company that slowly lights up over a half hour (like the sun rising). After 30 minutes (once it has lit up the whole room) a regular beeper alarm on it goes off. I find it a lot easier to get up with a clock that simulates the sun rising. It is much less irritating to me than a regular alarm that pierces the darkness (and my sound sleep:)
I keep my meds and a water bottle by my bed and the first thing I do is take a pill and lay in bed for another 15 to 30 minutes until it takes effect.
If anyone is interested, you can find these light/alarms for sale through the airline merchandise catalogs.
