Posted by Endless SLeeper on May 17, 2001 at 00:34:24:HI I've been lurking here for many months and I thought I would share this with all of you. I have been diagnosed with N for about a year. I've been experiencing all symptoms except cataplexy all of my life. I volunteered to participate in the Stanford Study last December. My sister also has the same symptoms and so did my maternal grandmother. My sister's results are still pending. But I just received mine. I have two of the genetic markers associated with N but my hypocretin levels are normal. My understanding is that they are finding that people with cataplexy have little to no hypocretin levels and people without cataplexy have normal levels. That maybe the problem lies with the receptor cells. My guess is that they will probably divide N into type 1 and type 2 like diabetes. This is only my limited understanding and estimation. So for people with cataplexy maybe replacing hypocretins will "cure" them. I just hope that something can be done for the rest of us.
