I am on just 100mg provigil a day which I have been on for four or five months. The first couple of week were hard and I was ready to give up . I had a horrible headache (but with the new energy and alertness it shocked me to feel that I was happy with that state than the spaced out one) which I took paracetamol for. I felt agitated but this passed and I am now more relaxed than I was before. Palptiations were thing that bothered me but I have started drinking only decafeinated coffee and tea and this has pretty much disappeared.
Perhaps you should try switching to a lower dose of Provigil and take it first thing in the morning. It will wear off but I reckon you will get a decent day-time out of it- enough to give you some kind of a life.
Give it a few weeks first and then see your doctor to see if you can finely tune the balance better by trying lower doses first. The recommended dose with provigil is 200mgs but it is an unusual drug in that taking a larger quantity only increases side-effects and has no more effectiveness (see the cephalon website).
I started on 100mg and even my cataplexy has significantly decreased and I am no longer the tired frustrated person easily overwhelmed and floored by life! I look after two under-fives and although I am not perfect I am loving 'being with them' all day! (until wear off time at approx 5.15pm).
100mg is just enough to get me out the house and taking some exercise (and has given me some confidence) this has a knock-on affect on my alertness,
Best Wishes,
from Redpath
