Hello T.R.! I certainly understand how you feel--but my problem is the other way around: I've been taking Ritalin for about 8 years but my new doctor wants me to try Provigil (since it's specifically for narcolepsy) but I'm afraid to try something new!

The first med I was put on was Prozac, which definitely helped (had side effects only for first 2 weeks,) but I knew I could feel better.
For two years I tried the whole list of meds (without good results,) finally, as a sort of last ditch effort, I was put on Ritalin. And BINGO!--finally something helped, and WITHOUT side effects!

Through the years I have never had to increase the dose (10 mg. 3 x day; along with the Prozac, 20 mg. 2 x day.) Rather than lose weight, I've gained about 30 lbs., but I attribute it to my age (now 51) and genes (the women in my family have gained even more as they've aged.)

The effect of the Ritalin has always been very subtle--I never feel hyper or shakey (though even a little coffee will make me feel that way.) It makes me just feel more awake; less "fuzzy." And, I like that it takes only 10-20 minutes to feel its effect after taking it, and that it wears off after 3-4 hours, so it won't interfere with sleep (though I can still take a nap in those 3-4 hours if I really need to.)

What I DON'T LIKE is that it requires a triplicate prescription and is so heavily restricted and has such a sleazy reputation! I really resent that part! For people who really need it (like us) it only helps us feel more normal--it usually doesn't have the bad, dangerous effects. Actually, I suspect my new doctor wants me to change to Provigil because it's NOT as heavily regulated, so it's less of a hassle for him!

Anyway, T.R., if your doctor recommends it, I personally don't see anything too scary about trying it at least for a day or two. Of course, everyone's reaction is unique, but you'll never know what yours will be until you try it.

Good luck to you!
