DozyGuy --

Sounds like you may have something called Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH), which is basically the execssive daytime sleepiness (EDS) by itself with no other symptoms of narcolepsy (no cataplexy, sleep paralysis, or halucinations). People with IH tend to not be refreshed by their naps, and usually mention being tired all the time or lacking energy. The treatment is the same as for the EDS associated with narcolepsy. At least, that is how I understand it...

Although I'm not a medical doctor, your doc is WRONG -- if you have narcolepsy or IH, there ARE meds which will almost certainly help. The most commonly-used are Provigil, Ritalin, and Dexadrine. Keep a log of your naps, sleepiness episodes, energy levels, how much sleep each night, etc. Do this for a few weeks, then go to your doc, show him/her your logbook, and INSIST on a referral to a board-certified specialist in sleep medicine (preferably one who also has a background in neurology). Change primary care doctors if you have to, but get to a sleep doc. Your life is too short and precious to waste being sleepy all the time!!!

Let us know how things turn out. This forum is a wonderful place to come for information and support. Hope to see you back soon.
