Am I just crazy and lazy???

Posted by Dazed Confused on August 13, 2001 at 16:20:43:

I have gone back and forth with this whole narcolepsy thing. For me it started at 16 yrs. old. My mom took me to the doctor's because teachers reported to her that I was constantly falling asleep during class and tests. I would never remember falling asleep, they would just wake me up and class would be over. When the doc told my mom that I could have narcolepsy she refused to believe that anything serious could be wrong with her daughter. When I turned 18 and I was driving farther to college, the problems/danger became more appearant to me. I would get to school and not remember the drive from a certain point on (about 15 - 30 minutes). I would get so sleepy while driving that I didn't care if I crashed… I had to sleep (note: I'm not self-descructive, nor EVER want to hurt anyone). I finally went to the doctors on my own and did the MLST test. They prescribed Cylert for me and it seemed to help. My family and friends were laughing at me (and still do, including my husband). My insurance dropped me because I was no longer a dependant. My problem was still not resolved. The tests came back unconclusive. The narcolepsy panel showed positive to only one of the antigens HLA-DQ1 or HLA-DR2 (can't remember which one). And I showed two out of the five MSLT tests with REM resultant under 5 minutes (or whatever they test for, I had 2). The report confused even the Sleep Specialist Center.

I am now 25 yrs. old, married, with two kids. I have a full-time job and an (almost) always supportive husband. He refuses to believe I have anything wrong with me (nor does anyone else in my family). I live very close to my work and I refuse to do any optional driving (i make my husband). My husband thinks I am just bored, so I fall alseep. I don't remember things or certain events (chunks of time) because they don't interest me. I'm beginning to think I made it all up in my head and I AM just bored (staff meetings, lectures, classes when I attended college, driving, movies and television). I guess it can't be all bad. I know I'll NEVER have insomnia. I can fall asleep anywhere, anytime, anyposition. There is only one aspect that scares me, and it is driving with my kids or crashing and hurting someone else.

BTW - Anyone have an opinion on Clyert? I've heard negative things regarding it's effect on the liver. My HMO general "knows nothing about Narc" doctor has prescribed Cylert to me because that's what I was prescribe yrs. ago. I have stopped because of the warnings and the constent form needing to be signed (scary). He says he doesn't feel comfortable prescribing me anything else. So it is either that (liver damage?) or very sleepy me.
