Dear Dazed & Confused:

You **must** argue to see a doctor that can treat you responsibly. I spent four years in useless pyschotherapy and on some pretty strong psychiatric medications becuase I was diagnosed as split personality disorder since I couln't remember the things I did. But I was really asleep and functioning in what the sleep doctors call autonomic fuctioning.

Thank goodness a new psychiatrist suggested a sleep study and was willing to look beyond all the labels that the previous doctors had put on my head: pyschotic depression, borderline personality, manic-depressive disorder, etc.
I was definitely depressed, even suicidal at times. But who wouldn't be with narcolepsy that wasn't being treated and doctors trying to figure out who my other personalities were (and they didn't even exist!)

I know it's expensive, but you may have to by-pass your HMO and find your own doctor. But the expense pales in comparison to lives of you and your children. Don't give up. Even if you don't technically have narcolepsy, you may have excessive daytime sleepiness and it's treated the same way as narcolepsy.

Let us know what happens. This is the one place on the net that people care about each other.
