I also have panic attacks. If I sleep in the dark I will sometimes wake up and end up in another room. If it is dark I believe that I am dead and everyone else is gone and I am totally alone. I have had N for over 30 years, but I just found out this year. I have compensated over the years by 1) always sleeping with a light on so I am don't wake up in the middle of the night disoriented and 2) I always sleep with the television on. My husband of 27 years has never quite understood this, but now I know why I must do these two things in order to to go crazy in the middle of the night. Good luck!
