I've got OSA and Atypical Narcolepsy. I went through the overnight study where they found the OSA and did the titration for the CPAP (which I've been using for almost a year now). After about two months, I was still sleepy. I'd fall asleep at my desk- or sneak off to the bathroom for a nap- and fall asleep in meetings. It was horrible. They then had me in for a day-time test, an MSLT (Multiple Sleep Latency Test). I pegged that one and fell asleep in all four of my naps (they didn't do a fifth since I had slept in all of the naps) within 30 seconds at the fastest to two minutes for the slowest. The thing is, I didn't enter REM sleep for any of my naps. I don't have cataplexy either, so they couldn't say it was definately Narcolepsy. I did have HH, especially during my sleep attacks during the day, but none for the naps. With my new "diagnosis", my doctor put me on Provigil which has really changed my life. I still get sleep attacks, but I can fight them off now.

Funny thing is, I think my grandmother has N, too. She won't admit it, and thinks that I have a thyroid issue (I've been tested for that and have no symptoms- normal weight, etc.) but she doesn't understand N, thinks it must be something else. My husband realized that what I had was real after visiting her- he had never seen anyone fall asleep like that except for me, and I think that he might have thought that it was some lack of dicipline on my part or something. He's very supportive now, though.

So, more info than you were looking for I'm sure, but yes- there are varying degrees of N. Good luck on your sleep test! Having concrete proof, like the sleep test helps, and perhaps your doctor can perscribe something that will help you maintain alertness during the day. As for waking during the night, I'm getting that too and think it might be the decongestant in my allergy meds (doc thinks so too and is having me lay off them) so think of things like that and bring them up with your doc. Also if you've gained or lost weight, that could contribute too...
