At the present time it looks like the vast majority of narcoleptics have autoimmune type narcolepsy which is a little genetic in the sense that they typicaly (but not always) have the 0602 gene, problem is so do 25% of normals. On the other hand there are rare instances of truely genetic narcolepsy pased on from one generation to another that involve mutations in the structure of hypocretin or it's receptor,or some other gene as yet unidentified.Despite the fact that there are many autoimmune disorders and many have had alot of money and hence done a great deal of research in most cases the exact cause of autoimmune disorders has remained a mystery. Thats my best understanding.
