Hi verysleepy. I just had to repeat my sleep study in order to add on the MSLT. I finally got my diagnosis after almost a year of doctors thinking I was crazy, etc, so I am really relieved to see that it's due to something a little more concrete. The way my sleep MD explained it to me, the MSLT is done for 2 reasons- to see how long it takes you to fall asleep, and to see if you have REM sleep on any of the naps. Just because you fall asleep quickly doesn't immediately point to Narcolepsy, but with the MSLT, they look for the REM sleep in 2 out of the 4 or 5 naps that they have you take. If you meet the criteria for REM in 2 naps, along with the excessive daytime sleepiness, it is enough to start you on treatment for the meds specific to narcolepsy. I knew that I dreamed in at least one of the naps, but I wasn't sure about the rest of them, and I wasn't even sure that I fell asleep in one of them, but as it turned out, I fell asleep in all of them, and had the REM in 2, so they were able to start me on the Provigil. Sometimes the tech doing the test will tell you something, and sometimes they won't. I also can fall asleep at the drop of a hat, and I show no signs of cataplexy, just HH. So, if that helps you any. Good luck!
