Well, it's so hard to tell when the down time is, because each day is different. With this employer wanting to change your shift, are you wanting to do this? Because if you're not, look up info about the disability act, and request "reasonable accomadation" of shift under the diagnosis of narcolepsy as a disability. The whole note from an MD would be good, but if you can't do that, just having any document with your diagnosis should do it. The job has to make allowances for your medical needs within reason, or they can be subject to a law suit, etc. I am a nurse, and they have often wanted me to work another shift, but I do have a note from my doctor specifying what I can and cannot do, because anyone who works in the health field is not subject to the same rules. My hospital doesn't care if I have the raging stomach flu, just get here and take care of these sick people or else! So, they aren't very supportive when you tell them you have a sleep disorder. If your doc won't help you, you can still stand up for yourself with the proper info from the disability act and a paper trail. Make sure the note includes the phrase "reasonable accomadation" to hold up in court if necessary. Why should you be forced to do something you feel may be harmful to your health or a danger to others on the road when there are other options available. And, if they try to terminate you, a paper trail can also hold up in court. I have found my hospital very willing to work with me, once I told them that I cannot and would not alter my schedule. I have been an outstanding employee up until this point, so they have no choice but to comply. Most places should be fairly reasonable. Please, don't make comprimises with your health. Do what is best for you. Only you know your own body. It's a shame you feel you have to pole the group of narcoleptics in order to gather info about down times. We're more than willing to help, of course, but it seems as though you could take a different approach altogether and keep your life going fairly smoothly. I know it's hard to stand up to the bosses, but this is your life and your health at stake, and you have to be willing to be firm and request what you need, with or without the MD. If they would help(the md) it'd make things a whole lot easier on you, but with or without him, tell the boss to take a long walk off a short peer!!!! :o) Take care! Let us know what happens!
