When I get cuts or scrapes from falling down I like to put a ridiculous bandaid on my face like a scooby-doo or looney tunes one. It may sound ridiculous or simple-minded to some but it helps me make light of the situation. Other people tend to comment on the bandaid not the cut.
As far as people not understanding....I can understand that. Sometimes family members may feel uncomfortable about someone they love not being 100%... so they make jokes. It stinks. Maybe they feel like they have to acknowledge your condition, but don't know how. If it really bothers you, I'd tell them, if you have the type of family members that will accept such a statement. I don't have that type of family. I go to a councilor when I get really fed up. I get to vent there and I don't lash out at someone.
Hang in there.
