Medication Roller Coaster - Need Advice

Posted by Jayde on January 29, 2002 at 23:06:58:

Hello Everyone:

It has been a while since I have been here and I have missed ya'll. I knew your support was helpful but I just didn't realize exactly how much. I hope that there is someone out there who can help me. I thought life was bad when I failed my classes (and for those of you who remember my struggle with college classes last semester, yes I did fail ALL of them).

Here's the deal: Since diagnosis in June 2001 I had been on Provigil. I was fine to function on it as long as any activity I did, did not require much thought. I was dazed and confused quite often. I didn't know what day it was sometimes, I couldn't talk right and I would stutter. I assumed this somehow had to deal with the narcolepsy not the Provigil. I didn't think much of it - just suffered through it- until someone mentioned experiencing some of the same things. I immediately changed to Cylert and I began to get better. My mental functioning ability was slowly returning. Eventually, the Cylert didn't work quite as well but M.d. wouldn't increase it. His suggestion: Add a small amount of Provigil back in there. Initially I didn't want to but I got desperate so I did. Then come to find out - the provigil decreases the effective of Depo-Provera Injection which I use for birth-control. And now, I am back to the goofiness again. I once again asked M.D. to help me and again he declined.

I do have an appointment on Monday, Feb 4 at Stanford Sleep Clinic at Stanford University. I know it is only a few days but I was desperate. I asked my primary M.D. for ritalin or dexedrine to get me through until the appointment. I am starting a new semester and I'd prefer not to have a repeat of the last. He humored me and gave me ritalin 10mg twice a day. I quit Provigil sometime last week and this weekend I fell hard. I have been so tired it ain't funny. Monday and Tuesday I went to work to get necessary things done then went home to sleep. I was just flat knocked out. The ritalin didn't make a dent. Tonight I took 20mg (bad, I know) but I am extremely desperate. It is like I am just hitting a wall.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I am scared. When the ritalin didn't make a dent - it freaked me out. I know there are others who are worse off than I, but I need to find a way to get out of this and be able to function.

Thanks,
Jayde
