Yes, I used to react the same way -- heart pounding and breathless. Sometimes tried to "answer" the alarm instead of the phone since I was used to that being what I hit to make the noise stop in the AM. I'm not so bad about it now, but then I don't get many calls when I'm in deep sleep. When I get calls that awaken me from a nap I always tell them "No, I wasn't asleep" but then realize afterwards that of course I had been. Just that now I go from sleep to wake so quickly and function somewhat okay so I don't know that I was just asleep until I think back to "What was I doing?" When I think, "Oh yeah, lying down", I know I was out. Maybe it gets better as you get used to dealing w/ N. Did for me any way but then after 20 yrs w/ it, I also no longer have trouble awakening to an alarm. Usually up before it goes off or don't use one at all. In high school I'd hit snooze over and over until someone came and made me get up.
Think about how "normal" people react to the phone ringing. I suspect they do much the same as us. It is just a sound that we are trained to respond quickly to, whether awake or asleep.
