Sorry, not the night owl. My social life as a younger adult got cut kind of short because I couldn't stay up and party and fell asleep on most dates. Always wanted the fun of the nightlife but just was too tired. Had good friends that didn't mind my catnaps though, and generally good dates that just let me catnap thru them. But now I go to sleep around midnite and awaken at 1:00 am to 3:00 am feeling like I've slept the nite thru. The feeling only lasts for a few hours and have to go back to bed again for a few hours. Then up for breakfast and back for another nap. Getting tired of always napping and not sleeping the nite thru. Too much stress.
My response is really about your school experience. That is so not fair for a teacher to have humiliated you for sleeping in class. Makes my resolve even stronger to go out and teach the world about N. I know teachers aren't trained in everything but they should have had enough sense to know that there must be some sort of health problem (lack of proper nutrients, not enough sleep, whatever). And then to keep you from graduating w/o giving you advance warning. Doesn't sound like a teacher who had the right mindset to be teaching. They are there to shape you for success in life, not beat you down before you even get in the game. Heck yeah, they'd be first on my list (if I still knew where they were)to go and let them have it for having almost destroyed a life by their own stupidity or lack of caring. If they are still teaching they probably are doing the same to other kids. If the stats are that 1 in 2000 is a PWN, think how many N students pass thru each school over a teacher's career. And there are many other sleep disorders that are more prevelent. It should be a required subject in preparing teachers. I believe most are trained to recognize child abuse and learning disabilities, I want N taught along side that.
I never had any teacher make a comment about my sleeping. One nicely asked if I needed to go get a drink one time, which I thought was a lovely idea. Another enjoyed trying to trip me up by throwing a question my way when he knew I was out (sat in the front row). I still heard it in my sleep and could wake up answering it about as well as if I'd been awake the whole time. He also plotted w/ my friend who sat next to me to quietly stack up books under my nose when I was nodding off thinking I would eventually hit them w/ my face but I never did. Don't ever recall any other kids making fun of me. Just most were amazed by it.
One teacher would almost daily haul the poor goofed up kid sitting next to me out in the hall for sleeping in class. Mr. K's yelling at Skeeter was what usually awakened me. He was known for being a tough teacher and scared the heck outta me. But, I got him figured out --all except for why I wasn't kicked out of class for sleeping too-- and brown nosed him. He has been the high school teacher who has been the most supportive of me in my adult life. Offered to make contacts for a teaching career, job references, anything, because he said he always knew I had great potential. He's the one I've wanted the most to go back and tell him about the N and ask how he knew I was trying (wasn't real good at keeping my homework done either, having nothing to do w/ N--too much TV).
As a child I had the hardest time winding down for the mandatory naps. Just didn't want to waste time on such a thing when I had so much I wanted to do. Mom & I always tangled over that issue since she had 4 kids in 4 yrs and needed the break herself. Now I long for those days of getting out my little nap rug in kindergarten and lying down for a few little zzzzz until the Wake Up Fairy tapped me w/ her wand. Oh, the simple times of life when the biggest question was which kind of bubble gum do I want to chew today.
