They can tell the difference by the folowing :

if you fall asleep within 5 minutes at the beginning of your nap and go into REM sleep soon after at least three naps then you have narcolepsy.

I am going for my 2nd sleep study tomorrow night as I have been exhausted in the past little while (even on meds!) - I'm ansious to see if my N is getting worse or if I'm just losing my mind!
