I sometimes use codeine to keep me awake (under a physician's direction, of course). About 10 years ago, there was a paper published in a medical journal that said codeine helped some naroleptics maintain wakefulness. You should be able to find the specific publication if you can get on MEDLINE somewhere.

I am on an MAO inhibitor for my narcolepsy and can't take amphitamine or Ritalin or any of their derivatives. Provigil gives me terrible headaches, so I depend on the codeine if I drive long distances.

I usually take Darvocet for severe pain at night (I have a very arthritic knee), but I have never noticed it keeping me awake.
