i don't quite know what barry was referring to. The 'ADD-as-a-child' thing, is more that sleep-deprivation in children often causes ADD-like symptoms (for the same reasons; a self-stimulating technique). Because many PWNs begin some symptoms when younger, but don't receive a diagnosis or treatment for many years - or until symptoms like cateplexy appear - many showed ADD symptoms as children. As well, when treated with ritalin, they showed improvement (they got the break from the tired-ness). ADD can also occur co-morbidly with many conditions that originate in brain function.
The HLA marker and genetic association probably contributes to the immune system attack on the hypocretin receptors (why YOU? why not HIM? etc). But Standford is having experimental success with hypocretin injections into their narcoleptic dogs. With decent levels of hypocretin, apparently they can control the cateplexy and other symptoms that arise from the sleep/wake-switch dysfunction. My guess is that ultimately (within 20 years) it will be controllable like diabetes. Not cured, but maybe a daily pill or injection to replace what the body can't produce itself anymore. Could you imagine how much improvement on quality of life would be possible? All of these people here?! I t would be wonderful.
