My connection to this is based on what you already state and what discussions that we've had here and elsewhere which seem to show we have a great many of us who can't stand extreme temperatures either way. (I can tolerate the cold much better than the heat.)
My theory as an individual unqualified to make such a theory :) is that the lack of hypocretin in the hypothalamus affects many of the areas that it regulates. Such as those you mention. And I sure hope researchers are exploring that.
I can't say that my growth has been affected as I am normal or above heigth although pretty skinny, which runs in our family. I also can't say that I have the extreme that your son does because I can't stand to have a fan on me even in the summer and I sleep w/ blankets up until I absolutely can't stand to in the summer. And I like my room cold but not that cold. I don't even really like AC.
I can say that in my case the heat reaction has nothing to do w/ the stimulants because I take no N meds. Or any others that should cause it.
I know early on when I was first showing symptoms of N, I had what I believe was a convulsive fit when I entered the house after sun bathing. I fell to the floor as I stepped into the darkened house and can't remember how it happened. Next think I knew I was hearing pounding and finally figured out it was my head banging against the washer, which is why I think I was convulsing. I think I blacked out. Later in the day I had a near same experience after returing to the sun to nap it off (obviously I made no real connection to the heat/sun having just had a dangerous affect on me). Again when I came in I had a spell, this time falling flat against the kitchen table and spilling my dad's coffee. He was alarmed and grabbed me yelling at me. We never talked about why or what caused it afterwards. I was embarrassed, had a bad headache and went to bed.
And I often feel like I could pass out in the heat but I never have. I do often experience symptoms of heat stroke when I've had to be out in the heat, which I think include cramping and diarreha along w/ flushed skin. Almost always a migraine.
We'll just see if anyone else bites.
