Linda with Hypersomnia, are you out there?

Linda,

I tried to post this earlier, but apparently it didn't take. I wanted to award you an honorary sleep doctor degree. This week I went to a new sleep doc and guess what she thinks I have - Idiopathic Hypersomnolence - just what you diagnosed. I have an overnight and a daytime sleep study scheduled for 9/8 and 9/9. I'm a little nervous for fear those would be two days when I am asymptomatic and they'll think I'm just crazy and I won't get any treatment. I like this new doctor and hope that she is open to medication suggestions from me. She seems very sold on Provigil, which I know you said works well for you, but I am a bit leery of the possible side effects. I have no tolerance whatsoever for nausea, diarrhea, or insomnia and if I definitely can't afford to gain any more weight, as I am already severely overweight (at least partially because I can't motivate myself to exercise and, anyway, it would cut into my nap time). I really, really want to start out on Ritalin. I felt so great when I was on it for that short time some years ago. I know you can develop a tolerance, but that probably wouldn't happen for a while and there's no chance I would be abusing it because the only thing worse than daytime sleepiness, as far as I'm concerned, is insomnia. If it was absolutely the only drug available I would probably be motivated to take and see if any side effects I had would abate. But, since it isn't, I'd rather save it as something to try further down the line. Anyway, I wanted to tell you that you are definitely smarter than Dr. Awful (my fond nickname for my first sleep doc) and thank you again for your advice. This forum is a real godsend. Please keep a good thought that my sleep test tells me something. Have a great weekend!

DeeAnn
