Linda --

Being diagnosed with a chronic illness is depressing, so you are right on track. (I was actually relieved, I thought I had a brain tumor because I kept falling over).

I went and saw a shrink that dealt with chronic illnesses, went to my local Narcolepsey Network support groups, and am currently a Narcolpesey Forum 2 addict (beats dexidrine). I have a friend who is diabetic that I talk to because we both have difficulty being understood. I think being understood is the hardest part about being Narcoleptic.

Once you learn to manage your Narcolepsey with naps and medication it actually isn't so bad. Being a health nut helps, the whole eight glasses of water a day, eat your veggies, drop the excess weight, exercise thing helps tremendously. The weeks I blow off the eating right and exercising I feel crummy, and I have more nap attacks.
I also went to an allergist after reading some of the forum letters. I'm allergic to lots of stuff. Dealing with the allergies has helped a lot too. If you have respirtory problems you might want to persue the allergy thing.

So look at it this way, you may feel crummy, but now you can start to get the right treatment and feel better. You don't have the luxury of abusing your body like most folks can, so throw out the twinkies, put on your sneakers, take care of yourself. You now have a great reason to get in the best shape of your life and hire a housekeeper (dust mites -- icky).

Good napping,

-- Emma
