Tim, I too am taking Provigil & it's working pretty good. I have had to adjust dosage twice, though. You may also find a need to do this. It's pretty common.
Will Provigil keep "normal" people awake? Absolutely! They did a study of normal people & they stayed awake for 3 days with no real noticeable side effects! This is one of the concerns about this drug. ABUSE! by students, graveyard shift people, military, etc.
I also went off the meds for a weekend. By Sunday I was so bad i couldn't carry on a conversation without falling asleep. It was BAD.
Worse than I'd ever experienced without meds.
I understand this is normal. I spoke to my Doctor about it. She said Provigil is designed to be taken daily, no drug holidays. It has a cumulative effect & doesn't reach optimum effectiveness for 3 weeks. I do actually take a smaller dosage on weekends. I normally take 200mg in the morning, then 100mg at lunch. On weekends I don't take the lunch meds.
Glad to hear you have a mild case. My case is fairly mild compared to what I've read in here. I just fall asleep at work 2-3 times a day & have always gotten sleepy when driving, but I recognize it when it happens, pull over for 5-10 minutes & sleep or get something to eat or drink, anything to get past the episode then I'm fine.
Good Luck, Vern
