I was informed in 1990 when I was diagnosed that you are born with Narcolepsy. Given the recent news of the cause being neurons or something in your brain, you are probably born with it. Keep in mind that if you do not have it to an extreme it may not show until later in life. I only have it mildly so that it tends to hit me more when I am doing something monatonous like studying or driving. Therefore as a curious and active youngster, it would not be noticeable. I didn't have problems until college, trying to study difficult topics. As is always recommended you may want to consider a sleep test.
