John,

My condition, idiopathic hypersomnia, which has the same excessive daytime sleepiness as narcolepsy without cataplexy or disrupted nighttime sleep, first appeared when I was in jr. high, though it was not officially diagnosed until I was 45. My mother recounts a worry that I had leukemia when I was 13 because I slept so much. My diagnosis was missed by many docs looking for signs of the cataplexy they believed was the hallmark of narcolepsy, so be aware that your daughter could have hypersomnia if narcolepsy is ruled out. She is very fortunate to have an attentive and concerned parent like you so that she might receive the treatment many of us waited half our lives to start.
