I keep copies of the following in my purse with me at all times in case I have an attack of cataplexy, after it's over, I can hand it to anyone so it describes what has occurred:
"I have narcolepsy."The most recognized symptom of narcolepsy is excessive sleepiness. The second-most common symptom is cataplexy, where I lose control of my voluntary muscles. This is most commonly triggered by strong emotion, such as humor, anger, excitement, sorrow. These cataplexy episodes happen occasionally. The episode is almost always over within 5 seconds.
"I become 'dead weight.' My voluntary muscles, including my leg muscles, don't work when this happens. I appear to be unconsdcious; I am not. I am totally aware of my surroundsings, I just can't move or open my eyes. I continue breathing; I won't swallow my tongue or soil myself.
"If you have any questions, please ask them."
I've also passed this out to many of my coworkers so they can understand.
Hope this helps.
