I actually was not diagonosed until in my forties, but now realize I had minor symptoms most of my life. My dr. agreed it usually shows up in teens or early 20s..he also said it tends to run in families (thus supporting the genetic theories). I've since read that often it either lies "dormant" or very mild until some stress or trauma brings it out. Mine came out while caring for my terminally ill mother and became full-fledged after she died. Growing up, I talked in my sleep and had sleep paralysis, but thought everyone did and that it was normal. Then, while caring for Mom, thought the EDS was due to simple fatigue. After she died, though, the cataplexy and hallucinations, etc. completed the picture. While reading a med journal at work, I realized I had all the symptoms (and was not "losing my mind" like I thought!)...look around your family- bet you'll find others who either talk/walk in their sleep, or can drop off easily, etc. I did!
