Zookeeper,
I am 35, have had N for more than 20 yrs, officially dx'd in 2000 but knew it for 15 yrs before I sought the dx. Sometimes wish now I'd never pursued the dx since it has done me little good to be labeled and not get the benefits of the label -- such as an employer willing to accommodate.

I was fairly successful in life as far as making it thru school (dropped out in 3rd yr of college) w/ good grades and known to be a good employee. Other than during school, no one knew I was falling asleep numerous times during the day. Never had an employer write me up for sleeping on the job even though I did so every day. I was just darn good at making it look like I wasn't and my problem is mostly microsleeps, which are easier to hide. I busted butt to make up for the hour or two I lost to sleepiness during my work day. The way I did it was by taking a short nap on my lunch hour, at home where it was quiet enough to get good sleep, even if all I had was 5 min to take a nap. That is it--the answer for me is not in meds at this point, but in being able to nap when needed. And then I get up and push myself to get as much out of me until I again have to nap.

I will not try any meds right now. I'm too skinny to do amphetimines, too smart to take things that are going to damage vital organs, and I still want to have a family so at this point doesn't make much sense to go on something only to have to go off of it when I start having babies.

Xyrem interests me a lot. I think when I get the baby thing done that I will try it. By then I'll know if it is just another well promoted drug that has little follow thru like Provigil did. From what I've read I feel more comfortable w/ Xyrem because they know how it works, and it makes sense. Something disturbing about taking a drug (Pro) and being told that they don't know how or why it works, isn't there?
