I've actually given this a great deal of thought. As a child I was marked as gifted and I actually _felt_ smart. I went to a rural high school and by that time was so far ahead that I really just drifted through, graduating with a 4.0 my senior year as part of the National Honor Society. I went directly to college and during my freshman year felt considerably "duller" than before- I remember walking back to my dorm after a class (it seemed completely random if I could stay awake for the class at all) and thinking that it was only a few more steps to get to my bed and take a nap, sometimes stumbling on the way there- I was told it was because I wasn't getting enough sleep, which was at that time partially true. At any rate, I made it through and got through ten years out in the "real world". I was bothered by the idea that I was smart sometimes, but unable to pay attention often (like ADD) since I'd be struggling to keep awake. The Provigil certainly helped the awake part, I felt reborn, but still thought that somehow something else must be wrong with me. I feel reborn again on the Ritalin- I feel like I did when I was a kid, I can use my brain! I know that Ritalin isn't for everyone, but I feel like I have the ability to apply myself again- a true gift. :)
So, I guess I think that the "stupid attacks" were both part of the N (untreated) and the Provigil. My doc suggested that it might have been due to not taking enough Provigil- that maybe if I took more it would be better.
