Cataplexy - sudden or sneaking?

Posted by Clumsy on November 20, 2002 at 05:33:44:

Since discovering Narcolepsy, I have obviously been searching the net for all the information I can find on the subject. As I learn more and more, I seem to get tons of aha! experiences.

About cataplexy: I read that ppl will fall down when laughing. Untill now I haven't recognized myself in that. But thinking about it, I have indeed found myself on the floor when laughing hard, but isn't that "normal" - hence the expression rolling on the floor laughing?

When it happens to me, it's not so much that I fall, it's more that I feel my muscles giving in, so I quickly lay down, to AVOID falling. Any thoughts on this?

Is it not normal that ones muscles are more or less paralyzed when laughing hard or being surprised or frightened? I've always thought so, because I've been like that for as long as I can remember. (Although I know I've felt embarrassed about lying on the floor, thinking I'm too old to behave like this...)

Please, share your own experiences!
