You folks are probably going to want to slap me on this one. I never really thought about it as something other than "part of ME". That's because I don't recall a time when I didn't fall asleep extremely easily. We used to always joke about it in my family. I thought anyone further than a few minutes from the house lived at least an hour away, because I would always fall asleep in the car. Dad couldn't understand why I couldn't remember the path to various places when I first got my driver's license. I had to remind him that it's hard to observe such things if you're asleep after the first 2 turns, and it certainly didn't help that he's a scenic route driver and knows at least 4 different ways to get anywhere.

I remember my brothers were responsible for getting me out of bed for school in the morning. They would come in and "wake me up" (snicker) after the yelling from downstairs didn't yeild any results. They came up a second time and turned on the bright flourescent light and loudly telling me to get out of bed! I managed to sit straight up in bed, with my eyes open, and say "I'm awake". They went downstairs, I fell backward in bed immediately and was sound asleep without any recollection of the events. then they came in and wouldn't leave until I went into the bathroom and washed my face (not that I cared one way or the other they had to tell me what to do) and told me I had 5 minutes to get ready and be at school. That woke me up! I was running around throwing clothes on, grabbing money for lunch instead of making one, the whole nine yards while yelling the question "why didn't you wake me up sooner???" They nearly choked while being alternately frustrated and annoyed. Later, by a many years, I heard the story and said I didn't remember any of it except that some mornings I was woken up super late and still felt tired. They were surprised by that one, then we all laughed until we had tears run down our faces to find out both halves of the story really finished it off!

I would fall asleep in classes as early as 6th or 7th grade, but it didn't get truly noticeable until high school. So, I've always thought of myself as a generally sleepy person and didn't think anything of it until it interfered with my ability to drive. By that time it was so bad that being told what was causing it was a relief, because then I could get to work on ways to manage it better or at least know why things happened. The only reason it aggravates me now is because it has gotten worse again and is making things rather difficult; but lets face it, how can you get bored with extra time on your hands if you fall asleep so much that almost anything is still new to you. lol.

Well, good luck everyone... I have a date with my bed!
